Technical Producer/Director, Media and Production

The Opportunity

The Technical Producer/Director oversees all aspects of media production, ensuring seamless support for Banff Centre programs requiring video and audio production, while delivering high-quality content for Marketing and Communications. This role leads the planning, execution, and delivery of media projects, including video production, animation, audio post-production, live streaming, multi-camera productions, and professional music recording.

Serving as Video Director/Producer, the role provides creative and technical leadership, overseeing visual style, directing productions, and guiding post-production teams. The Technical Producer/Director collaborates with various departments to define and achieve production goals, manage media requirements, and coordinate resources. Additionally, they are responsible for developing annual plans and budgets, forecasting equipment, facilities, and crew costs, and managing daily operations and scheduling.

Reports: Senior Recording Engineer, Senior Video Editor, Lead Video Technician, Videographer/Editor, Lead Animator, Head Technologist, Technical Coordinator, Mastering Technician, Production Coordinator, General Technologist, and Recording Engineer.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to Managing Director, Digital, Film and Media, below are some key accountabilities:

Overall Planning

· Collaborate with marketing, programs and production teams to define production objectives, timelines, and deliverables

· Conduct annual technical assessments, prepare department cost estimates, identify personnel and resource needs, and determine studio, venue, and production space requirements

· Plan and allocate annual resources within capacity, ensuring equipment, personnel, and time are optimized for each project

· Responsible for the annual plan for the recording, editing, and post-production of performances, events, and artistic projects.

Video Production

· Ensure high-quality video capture for video productions and live events, oversee each stage of production maintaining high standards of quality, provide mentorship and guidance to team

· Supervise live-streaming of institutional events and performances, acting as a multi-cam director as needed

· Provide overall creative and technical direction, directing productions on an ongoing basis

· Provide hands-on camera mentorship and guidance

· Create the production schedule framework that outlines pre-production, shooting, editing, and post-production timelines

· Set delivery and publication dates, ensuring alignment with program and marketing/communications goals

· Work closely with the marketing team to create compelling video content specific to marketing and communications

· Collaborate with programs and production teams to develop and produce video and audio content and recordings that support educational and artistic programming.

Audio Recording Production

· Working Closely with The Senior Recording Engineer:

· Plan and oversee audio production schedules, ensuring timely execution of audio projects

· Oversee the recording and mixing of music performances, recording programs and artistic collaborations

Equipment/Facility Management

· Plan the acquisition, and supervise the installation, upgrading and maintenance of technical production equipment, including cameras, lighting, sound systems, video production studios, editing suites, recording studios and Storage Area Network (SAN) and infrastructure supporting the SAN

· Research and recommend new media technologies to enhance institutional capabilities

Professional Training Program (PTP)

· Develop learning goals and practical hands-on training opportunities for PTP’s in Media and Production

· Oversee the coordination of PTP applications for the media and production area, adjudication and notification processes, ensuring timely recruitment

· Ensure all program requirements and professional development objectives agreed to under the terms of the learning agreements and/or program mandate are met

· Manage the design and development of PTP group events/training sessions as appropriate

· Negotiate contracts for PTP faculty and guest speakers as required

Financial & Administration

· Manage/oversee production administration tasks including but not limited to contracts, billings, tracking of expenses, purchase orders, payments and rentals

· Plan and manage administration of capital purchases in accordance with established policies and procedures and under the guidance of the Managing Director

· Assist the Managing Director in developing the annual budget and staffing plan for the media production area

Job Requirements
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
• Completion of university degree in media production/related discipline or equivalent professional experience
• Ten years+ media production expertise with demonstrated management of team’s experience
• Exceptional project management skills
• Thorough knowledge of lighting, sound, video and editing workflows
• Strong scheduling, and budgetary management skills.
• Practical knowledge of composition, lighting, cameras, editing
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple streams with tight deadlines and a positive attitude while working under pressure
