Up to 1 temporary full-time position for 4 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in marketing, communications, or public relations related or equivalent post-secondary diploma or degree program, commencing in May 2026

The City of Edmonton is offering an exciting opportunity for a summer student to support both the Media Relations and Social Media teams in the Chief Communications Office. In this role, you will assist with media monitoring, triaging and scheduling media requests and other day-to-day media relations activities. You will also support the City’s corporate social media accounts, ensuring content is engaging and aligned with the City brand.

Working with business areas, you will contribute to social media campaigns, provide strategic recommendations and assist in creating and curating content across the City’s platforms. You will help identify trends and opportunities to connect with our audience and elevate the organization’s brand and profile.

This position interacts with a wide range of communications staff, clients, and subject matter experts. It’s a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both media relations and social media management while working alongside experienced professionals in a dynamic and supportive environment.

As a part of the team, you may:

  • Support the implementation of communications plans with an emphasis on creating a cohesive written and visual narrative
  • Support the City’s corporate social media presence by helping with social media planning, content calendars, scheduling, writing, editing and posting
  • Provide recommendations to strategy development and best use of social media in achieving communications goals in alignment with social media best practices, accessibility guidelines and City corporate guidelines
  • Work with staff in developing communications campaigns and evaluating the effectiveness, reach or other analytics
  • Monitor daily media coverage, assist in compiling reports and contribute to supporting proactive and responsive communications needs
  • Support media relations activities by triaging and scheduling media requests and coordinating with communications colleagues and subject matter experts as required
  • Demonstrate the City’s Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent as well as the seven commitments made to reconciliation through the City’s Indigenous Framework
 
Job Requirements
Job Requirements:
Current enrollment at a post-secondary institution, in an marketing, communications, or public relations related diploma or degree program
Experience using Google Workspace applications or equivalent applications
Experience in development and implementation of marketing and/or communications strategies
Experience using social media channels (Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) and in-app and third party content creation tools
Strong understanding of social media best practices, trends, and analytics
Assets:

Experience with programs such as Hootsuite, Asana, SendGrid and Meltwater
Skills Required for Success:

Knowledge of best practices on social media; experience developing strategies and content on social media platforms such as Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong time management and organization skills with attention to detail and deadlines
Creative mindset with an ability to adapt content for different platforms.
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external partners
Willingness to work independently and with a team

Additional Details:

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Salary: $21.586 - $27.472 (Hourly)
