Your role

We are expanding! CBC in British Columbia is seeking a skilled storyteller and shooter/editor to fill this brand new role in Nanaimo. The successful candidate will also be a creative thinker with strong community connections who brings original ideas and treatments to the newsroom, and has demonstrated skills in shooting and editing news. You embrace a culture of inclusion and understand the diverse and changing population in Nanaimo and central/northern Vancouver Island, and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

This is a telework situation, where you live and work out of your home in the Nanaimo area and collaborate with teams around the province. Under the general direction of the Executive Producer for CBC Victoria, you will operate as part of the daily news and current affairs team on Vancouver Island to research, gather, package and present media for CBC’s platforms including digital video and radio. You will use community connections to pitch and produce original stories and tell news stories using creative visual elements.

The work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices but there is latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity. You must adhere to CBC’s Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest at all times.

Please note the regular work schedule of this permanent full-time position Monday-Friday with some weekend work; schedule flexibility is required.

Job Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
• Graduation from University or Community College in a relevant course of study or equivalent industry experience.
• Three to five years directly related experience in a professional broadcast facility.
• Comfortable and dynamic on-air presence.
• Excellent interviewing and storytelling skills.
• Knowledge of the issues, events and communities important to people on Vancouver Island.
• Ability to write clearly and concisely.
• Proven ability to work independently, and with editorial teams in Victoria and Vancouver.
• Ability to field gather and edit on a smartphone or similar in-field device.
• Knowledge of field filing programs (e.g. Hindenburg, Dejero).
• Flexibility to work regularly for television, digital platforms and/or radio.
• Relevant experience in shooting and editing.
• Highly creative, imaginative, problem solver and motivated self-starter.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
• Experience with AVID, polopoly, or other content management tools for digital is an asset.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
• Valid passport – ability and willingness to travel.
