Underground Media + Design Graphic Designer
The Underground Media + Design Graphic Designer is responsible for designing and preparing graphics and artwork for internal and external clients (services and businesses in and around McMaster University and Hamilton) both independently and as directed by the Manager and Production Manager. The Graphic Designer designs graphics and liaises with clients as directed by Manager and Production Manager to ensure timely completion of multiple projects to the client’s satisfaction. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing camera-ready art, and preparing design work and graphics for internal and external clients.
Co-ordinate all aspects of graphic design jobs including liaising, quoting, designing, printing, producing, and delivering for both internal and external clients
In conjunction with the Production Manager, obtain estimates for sub-contracting of printing jobs
Oversee and controls file management for design projects
Collaborate on, observe, and/or delegate design jobs with the Graphic Designer
Ensure adherence to MSU policies and procedures
Communicate with Underground Media + Design Staff to co-ordinate completing of design and print jobs
Liaise and maintain a positive working relationship with University representatives and MSU University Departments
Recommend improvements to the MSU Underground Media + Design
Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings
Assisting front staff with other duties that come into play in the daily operation of Underground Media + Design
Responsible for dealing with other routine and non-routine duties that come into play in the daily operation of the department. This includes assisting in the front of house during peak times.
Other duties as assigned and as time permits
The successful candidate will have the appropriate credentials and a portfolio demonstrating an ability to produce materials that are up to the standards of Underground Media + Design. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with students in a high-energy, dynamic environment. The following qualifications are minimum expectations for the successful candidate:
Related post-secondary diploma or degree.
Three years of work experience in graphic design.
Knowledge of current industry standard graphic programs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be personable and flexible enough to deal effectively with a wide demographic and skill set.
Must have a good sense of graphic design and technical skills.
High degree of skill with industry standard programs (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite) and other relevant web or print design based programs.
Must be able to work with Windows based design workstations.
Experience in ordering and inventory control procedures preferred.
Must have organizational and time management skills.
Creativity required to meet clients demands.
Willingness to participate in ongoing training to keep skills up to current industry standards.
Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to be able to deal with a variety of different individuals including clients, students, peers, and superiors.
