Job Description

Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications and Government Relations, the Manager, Media Relations acts as a liaison between media and key City of London spokespeople, and supports all City of London media initiatives by creating and/or providing guidance on editorial meetings, media pitches, media kits, media releases, and other media-focused initiatives. Cultivates and manages relationships with media representatives at the local, regional and national levels.

Work Performed

  • Manage and supervise staff with respect to assignments, projects and campaigns; assess and report on work performance and support for professional development opportunities.
  • Provide media relations and issues management advice and guidance to all levels of management within the Corporation, requiring knowledge of sensitive labour relations and personnel issues, budget information, business plans, and other confidential matters.
  • Monitor media coverage, identify potential public relations issues, develop responses and address issues quickly and directly. Develop related briefing materials for leadership and others as required.
  • Develop effective relationships and maintain contacts with the media.
  • Develop media relations strategies, including providing direction on news releases and other related materials. Develop, edit and arrange for distribution of news releases, and background material.
  • Respond to calls from the media and coordinate inquiries within the Corporation; proactively pitch story ideas to media as required.
  • Partner and maintain close working relationships with Service Areas to develop story ideas and call upon their assistance in responding to media inquiries.
  • Arrange media interviews and other media meetings with key stakeholders and staff subject matter experts. Support staff in responding to media.
  • Identify organization wide media relations opportunities, including, developing methods/tools of delivering the Corporation’s messages directly to the media, providing strategic direction to guide the promotion of Corporate programs and services.
  • Develop and deliver media relations and key spokesperson training to support the organization in effectively conveying key information to media.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the Corporation’s Media Relations Policy and related guidelines and programs.
  • Responsible for developing and managing media relations and media strategy, and related linkages to the Corporation website.
  • Assist with the budgeting and monitoring process as it relates to media relations.
  • Attend standing committee meetings to provide communications advice and support as required.
  • Provide media relations strategies for emerging issues as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 
Job Requirements
Qualifications/Experience
University Degree or College Diploma in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations.
A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience managing people and projects in a related field.
Experience working in news media as reporter, editor and/or producer combined with experience working in corporate communications and/or government communications role an asset.
Experience in developing communication strategies, effective communication and media campaigns and issues management plans/strategies.
Accredited Business Communicator (ABC) or Accredited in Public Relations (APR) designation or equivalencies would be an asset.
Specialized Training & Licenses
Skills and abilities in the following areas are necessary:


Effective written and oral communications skills, ability to clearly communicate with wide variety of people. Knowledge of Canadian Press style.
Ability to effectively influence and motivate others.
Creative, broad conceptual, diagnostic and analytical skills; ability to reach well grounded, independent conclusions and influence outcomes.
A quick learner, ability to break down complex and technical ideas and make them clear and understandable.
Must be able to effectively navigate a complex organizational structure.
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and creativity; as well, manage financial resources.
Strong project management skills and the ability to manage tight deadlines.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with superior attention to detail and strong follow-through.
Working knowledge of the technical aspects of graphic design, print, audio/visual production, social and digital media, and relevant video and social media software, systems and/or platforms.
Compensation and Other Information
$84,889 to $110,855

This is a permanent position being filled on a temporary basis for up to 2 years.
